Does anyone know what type of flowers these are?

They were very bright and cheery.

Here are some more close-ups that I took today while taking a break from mowing the yard. I love the detail you can see on the Iris as well as the other flowers. The butterfly was just begging to be the subject of a picture.....

Just a little cut-out and filter fun.....

I took this picture which showed way too much grass and shadow

in the mid-day sun. I decided to crop it, leaving the gazebo

as the focal point using the rule of thirds.

In addition I changed the brightness and contrast a little

in an attempt to enrich the color.

You can see this isn't a great picture,

but I was just trying to take one that had a splash of red.

It was totally marred by the road in the front.

I could have just cropped the road out of the picture,

but I decided to cover up the road and add more red instead...

Just playing around...

A few different views of the same picture.....

These two images of a gazebo

on the local common

are a good example of a typically centered picture

versus a picture taken using the rule of thirds.

I like both of these photgraphs but

I like the second picture more

because it still highlights the beauty of the gazebo,

while showing other interesting things as well.

Changing your view is a great way to change the composition of a photograph, and can be done in many ways. I've been playing with this in various pictures this week.

I got down on the floor, eye-level with my cat to capture a different pose. Shoes look entirely different when you're not looking down at them, but are shooting from the same level.

I experimented with standing up on chairs or a ladder for a different view and angle.

I positioned myself beneath an object and shot the camera upward to capture a branch, cloud, or something else unexpected as a background for the regular focal point.

These pictures show that the same vase can take on an entirely different look based on the angle that you are shooting from. Looking at items in a new way can add interest to a photo.

Shadows and Light

Afternoon sun with shadows, evening fading natural light, & evening with a flash.

I learned a lot about lighting this week as I took many, many photos in all kinds of light and shadow. This series of pictures shows a simple handle leaning against a fence in various states of lighting, both natural and flash. It would also be an example of a monochrome theme, if not for the bright leaves.

In addition, I took many indoor photos of various objects, playing around with the difference in using natural high and low light and the flash to fill the scene. It was interesting to learn about the reasons for the blue tinged and yellowish indoor pictures that I have often taken. I now know that I can’t count on the auto setting to get the best picture in all settings, and that I can make adjustments to ensure a better photograph.
